In mijn stadstuintje zweeft en zoemt van alles voorbij. De aangeplante tijm en wilde marjolein doen het goed bij de bestuivers. Met de waarnemingen app 'ObsIdentify' ga ik vaak op pad om alle kleine beestjes te determineren. Het is leuk om te leren over al die gekke, gekleurde bezoekers en door foto’s te maken en te uploaden draag ik bij aan het in kaart brengen van deze soorten.

Insecten spelen al verschillende jaren een grote rol in mijn werk. Zo maak ik werk geïnspireerd op - en met verwondering voor insecten, vanuit artikelen die ik lees of ervaringen en kennis die ik opdoe tijdens outdoor avontuurtjes. Soms, wanneer ik een insect dood aan tref, uitgedroogd op een vensterbank, of verpletterd op het fietspad, neem ik ze mee naar mijn studio waar ik ze een nieuw leven geef als (onderdeel van een) sculptuur, ingegoten in epoxy.

Het project 'Buurt Bugs' is ontstaan uit een verlangen om meer te betekenen voor deze kleine wezens waar ik zoveel inspiratie uit haal. Het project begon met een zoektocht naar informatie over kwetsbare insecten die in Arnhemse stadstuinen of zelfs op een balkon voor kunnen komen. De tweede fase van het project was een inzameling van materiaal, namelijk de kleding van buurtbewoners, wellicht ook van jou?

Daarna volgde de maakfase van de insect sculpturen/knuffels, de keramische bescherm reuzen en het bouwen van de websitepagina, waar ik momenteel druk mee bezig ben. Tijdens de expositie zullen buurtbewoners die kleding gedoneerd hebben dit kledingstuk kunnen herkennen in een specifiek insect en zo hopelijk meer feeling krijgen met dit kleine wonder wezen. Op een website pagina zullen zij, maar natuurlijk ook alle andere bezoekers, vervolgens informatie kunnen vinden over hoe ze dit insect zouden kunnen helpen, door bijvoorbeeld het zaaien van bepaalde planten of het laten liggen van takjes en hout voor schuilplaatsen.

Dus lieve buurtbewoner, kunstliefhebber, insectenbewonderaar, voel je welkom om op 11 april of daarna een kijkje te nemen bij het Blauwe Veld en je te laten informeren en inspireren.

All sorts of creatures flit and buzz by in my little city garden. The planted thyme and wild marjoram are a hit with the pollinators. I often head out with the observation app ‘ObsIdentify’ to identify all the little creatures. It’s fun to learn about all those quirky, colorful visitors, and by taking and uploading photos, I contribute to mapping these species.

Insects have played a major role in my work for several years now. I create work inspired by—and filled with wonder for—insects, drawing from articles I read or experiences and knowledge I gain during outdoor adventures. Sometimes, when I find a dead insect—dried out on a windowsill or squashed on the bike path—I take it to my studio, where I give it a new life as (part of) a sculpture, encased in epoxy.

The “Buurt Bugs” project arose from a desire to do more for these tiny creatures that inspire me so much. The project began with a search for information about vulnerable insects that can be found in Arnhem’s city gardens or even on a balcony. The second phase of the project involved collecting materials—specifically, clothing from local residents. Perhaps even yours?

This was followed by the creation of the insect sculptures/stuffed animals, the ceramic guardian giants, and the development of the website, which I am currently hard at work on. During the exhibition, local residents who donated clothing will be able to recognize their donated item in a specific insect, and hopefully develop a deeper connection with these tiny marvels. On a webpage, they—and of course all other visitors—will then be able to find information on how they can help this insect, for example by planting certain plants or leaving twigs and wood for shelters.
